Last month the fourth Racing Media Academy (RMA) cohort completed an intense week-long course in Newmarket learning all about the world of horseracing media and journalism.
The media week took place at the British Racing School (BRS) where the RMA cadets explored a number of different career avenues such as commentary, production, presenting and directing under the guidance of some of the biggest names in the business including journalists Lydia Hislop and Lee Mottershead and broadcaster and Racing Foundation Trustee Rishi Persad.
Since the cumulation of May’s course, the cadets have embarked on a salaried work placement, gaining experience at Sky Sports Racing, Racing TV, ITV Racing and the Racing Post among others.
The RMA was born in 2022 after broadcaster and entrepreneur Josh Apiafi identified a barrier to getting new diverse talent into the horse racing media. It is delivered by Apiafi Associates with funding support from the RMA’s media partners, the Racing Foundation, Spotlight Sports Group and Godolphin.
“The 2025 cohort has once again impressed us hugely with their enthusiasm and ideas,” beamed RMA project manager Lee Moulson as he reflects on the week at the BRS.
“It was wonderful to have our 51st person go through the programme this year and we couldn’t do it without the support of the media partners, the Racing Foundation, Godolphin, and Spotlight Sports Group, to whom we are very grateful.
“Most of them are now on their placements and I am getting regular updates from them and they are all loving it.”
Referring to a video produced during the week where the cadets’ new-found skills were put to the test during a mock race day staged at the BRS, Moulson added: “The cadets did a brilliant production for this year’s RMA Stakes – the culmination of their hard work on the course.”
Following their placements, the cadets will be assigned a mentor to ensure they have the best chance of gaining full-time work in their chosen sector of the racing industry.
